What do you think? Answer below!Question by REX: Does anyone know of challenging and thought-provoking plays (NON-MUSICAL) for high school actors to perform?
First things first. Our Town is off the board. Too overdone. Musicals are also a no-go. Shakespeare is a possibility but may be too sophisticated for our community. It would have to be a toned-down adaptation. Finally, I NEED TO HAVE A FEMALE LEAD IN THIS ONE, with more than 15 cast members in all (a pretty good mix of male and female).

PAST SHOWS (during my time): The Crucible, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Rebel Without A Cause, and Don Quixote

I have a great group of seniors next year. I want to send them off with a BANG. Sets and costumes are not a problem, but lighting can be a challenge.

This is going to be our Spring Show (on Mother’s Day weekend), so I would prefer (regrettably) something on the tame side. :) However, I want something challenging, thought-provoking, and well-known (at least in the theatrical world). I am not into fluffy, cheesey crap. Kids need REAL theatre.

PEACE OUT!

Unfortunately, there aren’t many non-musicals i can think of. However, the show WRECKS is a possibility. It would take a little bit of creativity though because it is written as a one-man show. Still, i bet you can make it your own and people should LOVE IT.

Give your answer to this question below!Question by : Is going to college or acting school better for actors?
My dream is to be a film actor. Stage would be great too but film is what I want. Any help or tips would be extremely helpful thank you!

Best answer:

Answer by Kyle
Going to school for acting is a very time consuming choice. There are many positives and negatives when evaluating this decision. Because of the projects, plays and student directing projects, majoring in drama or theatre arts in college requires many evenings and weekends, which makes it hard to have a job and a reasonable income. If you are young and have a lot of family support and do not mind doing the work, then go for it. If you are a more mature individual that takes care of him/herself, I would suggest finding a local theatre or community arts center that has acting classes and signing up.

Also realize that acting for theatre and film are two different things. If your goal is film acting, then taking theatre acting classes can greatly benefit you, but are not necessary. Some of the most talented film actors have started on stage, but some haven’t. Having a strong theatre background is excellent, but not necessary. Just try to find some acting classes in the area that work with your schedule.

Getting into voice over acting is a hefty investment. Largely because you have to invest thousands of dollars in putting together a demo reel that shows your range as a voice actor. There are different types of voiceovers. Commercials are the biggest chunk. Then there are promo, narrative, foreign language, audiobook, and animation. In animation, you want to create original characters, NOT imitations of Bart Simpson, etc.

Before forking over thousands of dollars to get your reel, get a lot of training before. Good training consists of proper vocal exercises and warmup, proper diction in American standard English, breaking down a VO script into phrases, and being able to make that script come to life with your imagination and not just some regular read. Improv is also highly recommended as well for you want to be able to loosen up and use your imagination when you’re in that isolation chamber (recording booth).

If I had to recommend a book, I think The Art of Voice Acting, 3rd edition by James R. Alburger is a good place to start. He also gives recommendations for other Voiceover resources as well.

Here’s a great Voice Acting resource site:

Julliard is one of THE hardest schools to get into, and i mean THE hardest. You have to be not great but amazing and stellar. Even then, its not guaranteed. To even get an audition there is an honor. Of all the auditions, they accept somewhere like 18 people.

Simple games or activities that can give high school actors/actresses a better understanding of what character they’re playing?

Websites?
Your ideas?
Stuff…

Best answer:

Answer by Azucena
Here’s one that I’ve used with older actors/actresses, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for high schoolers:

Have them create a story about their characters and what they were doing during the 24 hours before the setting of the play. So, if they’re doing, say, The Music Man, have whoever is playing Harold Hill think about where he was before he gets on the train at the beginning of the story. Why was he running? What happened? The girl who is playing Marian — what was she up to before Harold came to town? Exactly how did she spend the previous day? What was she wearing? Who did she talk to?

Have the students really think about this, then get up and talk to the entire cast, sharing what they created for their characters. They have to use a lot of detail: colors, sounds, conversations, etc. The more they create, the more they then get to know their characters.

You can also have them do the same thing for their character’s actions after the end of the play: assuming the character didn’t get killed, where did he or she go? With whom? etc. Can you predict what this character’s life will be like? Again, details help.

Whenever I did this, I felt I *really* knew who my character was (I did mostly opera, some theater, some musical theater).

Good luck!

What do you think? Answer below!Question by Kitten :) : Why in movies do 20/30-something actors play high school kids?
In the majority of teen movies, they are not played by teens but by 20 year olds.. it looks so unrealistic! for example watching glee the other day , why do directors choose to cast this way?

Best answer:

Answer by MissDementia
Because many high school kids are actually flat chested, scrawny zit factories. Who the hell wants to pay to see that?

Not that anyone should have to pay to see any crappy HS flick anyway, but ya know, since you will, don’t gross other people out with your generally (for most teens) poor eating habits and raging hormones obviously erupting all over your skin. Concession sales would plummet.

What do you think? Answer below!Question by : What are some good plays written as collections of short scenes that are good for middle school performers?
I help run the drama club at a middle school, and we’re trying to pick our play for next school year. This year, we are looking at plays that are actually collections of vignettes, preferably comedies. The ones I know of that fit this requirement are The Good Doctor, The Dining Room, All in the Timing, and Marcus is Walking.

We’ve already done Marcus is Walking a few years ago, All in the Timing has some inappropriate things, and The Good Doctor’s royalties are so expensive. I’d like to do The Dining Room, but the other director isn’t sold on it. So, I’m looking for some other ideas.

Does anyone have any other suggestions of collections of short scenes like these ones that might be good for middle school actors?

Best answer:

Answer by prozac_variety_cat
In middle school I was involved in a play called ‘Class Action’ It was a bunch of 4 minute or so scenes and monologues about middle/high school situations. It was great for the performers and audience. I’m sorry I can’t remember any more details at the moment, but when I find it I will let you know.

Know better? Leave your own answer in the comments!Question by : Do all actors/actresses go to acting school?
I have interest in acting..but I definitely will not go to school for it and waste my money, I’ll be a science major instead this coming fall. But any way, I figure if you just know the right people and have a natural ability to act, it could work right? Are there any prominent actors that never went to any sort of acting school?

Best answer:

Answer by S.K.
Certainly not every great actor studied acting. A number of people whose acting is considered flawless never studied formally–James Spader, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sean Penn. (There are probably many others; those are just the ones I happen to know about.) Other excellent actors did study, and credit that for their success.

So while it could work out without study, if this is what you really want, study cannot hurt and might help. I’d recommend it just to improve your odds in a highly competitive field. You will have to give up some things, and probably work to pay for it, but it comes down to how badly you want it.

It’s always going to be a matter of personal choice. It’s best to ask around and find out from their website which one is going to suit you. And don’t worry about all the other classes – one college might be brilliant for Cinematography, but poor for Acting. Choose the course you want, and forget about the others.

They’re all cheesy in a way of story, acting, CGI, and actors. I’m talking about ABS-CBN. They should stop using new teenage preppy actors. Old school actors like Aga Mulach and Sharon are underrated for some reason. Rising talent like Sarah Geronimo should stay on TV. Not the new overrated actors. Overall, the shows don’t make sense anymore.

I’ve got this one huge debate with my nanay because of those nonsense time eating primetime drama shows.
I came home from work and i saw her in the sala watching TV. I said “hay, napakadaling hulaan naman ang susunod na mangyayari. Sigurado may mamamatay dyan.” Then after three days or so, one of the main characters just died because of some yet another “STUPID” accident or another vengeful plot in the story, who cares? Hahaha! After that i laughed very annoyingly while saying, “yan namatay tuloy, sana nga mamatay na silang lahat!” And guess what, my nanay yelled at me, “eh anong gusto mong panoorin ko!?”
