Actors Workshop Q & A
Question by Imagination: Recommend a Good Actors Workshop in LA?
Hi, I will be in LA for a week next month and I am a new actor, trying to break into the biz. So I figure while I am there it would be nice to attend an acting workshop or something. Any really good ones you recommend? I know I can look in the paper or something but a recommendation would be better than a stab in the dark. Thanks.

I don’t know if he will have a class in the time frame you will be in LA, but my brother-in-law is a working hollywood movie producer and he sometimes has acting classes.

Before you spend money and time with an acting school you should probably look up some local community theaters and try and do a couple of shows there. It will give you some experience and will also help determin if you really like it or not before you go spending a bunch of money.
As for the school itself, I have never heard of it so I don’t know. I personally am a theater major in college and have had some amazing training so far within my school.
Give your answer to this question below!Question by : Is it normal for the actors in a theatre production to have to pay a “workshop” fee?
I auditioned for an upcoming production and was given a part, but was later informed that I would be required to pay $ 375. What’s that about?

Answer by K Young
Run away. You should never, EVER pay to be in a production, especially if they only ask you to pay after they’ve given you a part.

Give your answer to this question below!Question by javagirl: Legitimate actor’s workshop? Actors in CA please reply.?
I recently attended a free seminar given by a talent agency. The agent had tons of pictures posted of celebs she supposedly worked with and casted. After an hour of this agent and her assistant playing videos of work obtained for local actors, she handed out a flyer with a workshop list of classes totaling over $ 1,000. Then she did a brief video of each of us who attended and stated I had a very good look and my charisma was apparent on video. My response: If you think I have a chance, why do I need to pay you a cent? Maybe I’m ignorant on this–I’m just an artist seeking self-expression and a chance to do something cool before I’m too old and have regrets. Is it legitimate for talent agencies to charge the aspiring actor for these workshops with topics such as “how to read for auditions” “learning acting cues “lingo” and photos, applying make-up, how to dress, etc.? This agency’s name is De Vore Talent Agency in CA. The owner claims her name being mentioned gets actors work. Legit???
Best answer:
Answer by Allen L
You should absolutely not pay for these workshops. Agents are not allowed to teach classes in the state of California by law, so this person is either not an Agent at all, or is breaking the law. Get into acting class for sure, but it should have no affiliation with the agents or managers you work with. Good luck, and keep searching.

I might want to take classes there but I’m not sure if its like legit. Is it a good acting school and would you recommend it? Answer by ELDORADO59
I’m still trying to find someone who has taken classes there as well.
To be honest, with the exception of the South Coast Repertory in Orange County, the BEST training in Southern California is in L.A.
As far as training:
Here are some of the best schools in Southern California:
Cold Reading
-Margie Haber
-Brian Reise
Commercials
-Hey, I Saw Your Commercial!
-Stuart K. Robinson
-Carolyne Barry
Improv
-Groundlings
-Second City
-Upright Citizens Brigade
Scene Study/Acting
-Beverly Hills Playhouse
-Howard Fine
-Stella Adler
-Ivanna Chubbuck
-Joanne Baron/D.W. Brown
-Tom Todoroff
-Playhouse West
Stay away from those OVERPRICED “Acting/Modeling Schools” like JRP, John Casablancas, and Barbizon. All of those LA schools that I mentioned before JRP, JC, and Barb. are A LOT more affordable and actually RESPECTED in LA. Of course, if you don’t mind getting laughed out of LA and the other MAJOR markets, you’re more than welcome to have those 3 scammy schools on your resume.

I want to move to LA but ive never done workshops other than studying acting in college for a year. I live in TX and I don’t have an agency. Im wondering what direction to take before I move to LA or what I should do when I get there. Would I be wasting my time moving to LA without an agent?
Best answer:
Answer by Anne
I suspect that you will not get an agent in LA unless you live there. Agents make money on actors who go to auditions and get paid work. If you are living elsewhere, then an agent is highly unlikely to spend time sending you to auditions that you can’t attend because you can’t get there.
If there are good workshops available in TX, and you think that will help, it would certainly not hurt. For example, Tom Todoroff may offer something. It would be another reference on your resume, so that is all good, right?
Agents want to represent actors who have a performance history with a good work ethic, who have marketable skills and who work hard to get work.

I am looking into some intensive workshops in filmmaking, and was wondering if it would be a better idea to start with the film(the school uses 16 mm, but would give me a background in analog to use for 35 mm) or digital first. I am an actor with interest in screen acting so I feel this would be a way to diversify my skills and familiarize myself with the set and understand what everybody does. Any advice on this is most welcome.

So I’ve been looking into acting classes and I was wondering what would be better
Acting intensive, or actor workshop?
what do they both do?
And if I’m not right for either, what are good classes to start out with?
Oh and if you could, could you put in order of classes?
I’m dedicating my entire year to training for my acting career
So I’m going to be taking different classes all the time
Could you organize all the classes from beginning to
semi-advanced,
and then to advanced or whatever?
Best answer:
Answer by mrhpotter7
Look towards your local community college or university. 95% of the time, they will have a beginning acting or principles of acting, or something along those lines. Also, if you don’t want to deal with having to enroll, financial aid and all that jazz, you can audit the class. That way, you don’t have to worry even about grades or tests. I’ve taken acting classes and it’s helped out so much with learning what I need to do for a role and on stage.

Answer by Earl D
Workshops are things like Learning Tree, Powers classes, Calabasas classes, private classes, one time deals at Julliard, things like that.
Actors and directors start doing these if they can rather than work telemarketing jobs when there is no work.
Remember you go from making $ 2,000 a week minimum (sometimes $ 20,000) to 26 weeks of $ 500 a week unemployment to zero after 26 weeks.
A friend of mine gets one TV show every 18-24 months.
He makes residuals by now, but they puts his income at $ 20-35K a year and so you do a Learning Tree where you get like $ 25 a class and teach a 10 week intensive course in acting for TV or commercials, one hour a week.
You teach UCLA Extension.
Maybe you have yor own little theater or loft and you post an ad in the Village Voice and 12 students pay you $ 1,000 each for private 10 week course.

I am a 26 year old male and have finally decided what I want to do with regards to a future career…acting, hopefully on a professional level one day. However, although I certainly wouldnt rule out the option of training at such prestigious places like RADA or RSC I have heard that not all graduates of such places become successful afterwards.
Based on this,I dont really want to take the risk of forking out thousands of pounds worth of training. Therefore I have decided upon joining an acting workshop. With this sort of training, would it still be possible for me to become a professional actor so long as I am prepared to train VERY hard?
To be honest,I would prefer to get alot of training anyway as I respect the industry as an art form and would never want to get’an easy way’ in.

your talent and ability and being in the right place at the right time are what will determine your
amount of success, not where you went to school or how long you went to school. if you don’t
have talent and ability, no amount of school will give you any.

Give your answer to this question below!Question by : What techniques did Bob Fosse us as a director/choreographer?
I am doing a university project on Bob Fosse, I am creating a 20minute workshop based around his techniques as a director and choreographer, if anyone could tell me any specific techniques he used in his shows I would be very greatfull – like how he prepared his actors for the style of work? Thanks!
Best answer:
Answer by Jay
According to Liza Minnelli, he expected his dancers to practice over and over and over and over again, until they got it right. I’m not sure if being a perfectionist is a technique, but it certainly would fit into a 20 minute workshop.
You might go to Liza’s web site and see what she has to say about Bob Fosse, they were very close.

If you want it strongly enough, it will come to you… If you use the proper energy and your desire to become an actor is strong enough, it can happen. Focus on what you want by becoming an actor. That’s not nearly enough. Those actors have years and years of experience, they’re beautiful, connected and they have ridiculously huge pay checks.

When you are living there, let me know and I will help you. The best ones only deal with stars. Your ‘best’ one will be the one that gets you auditions. I don’t know their rules about non citizens participating in professional acting, but the rules in the US are very strict. You don’t put on your CV that you are Greek. They will figure that our from your CV entries.
What do you think? Answer below!Question by : What is the most important thing agents look out for when a person acts in a play?
When people act, what is the most important thing to do to become a good actor? Do agents come to watch plays like at a drama club or workshop, even if its just a local club or does it have to be a big, important, well known club?
Best answer:
Answer by Roger
Agents don’t look at plays at the amateur level. There are a million such and there are so many people who want their services that they wouldn’t have the time. You have to be in summer stock or somewhere professional or almost professional.
As for what they look for, it’s mostly looks. If you have devoted every second of your existence to securing a part so that you get a job acting in a major venue, and if you’re tall, extremely beautiful and sexually appealing and appear to have some intelligence (a secondary requirement), you might get noticed–if you’re lucky.
